Juliana Carlsen Design Philosophy

As a designer of residential interiors I recognize the profound significance our surroundings have on our well being. It is my intention to cultivate a supportive and beautiful environment that nourishes you. My designs are meant to create a home where you can totally relax and let go of the outside world.

It is my belief that a good home is never done. Our lives continually emerge and our home needs to change with us to meet our evolving needs. I have built a design practice that works with my clients over many years, through all phases of life.

Influences and Inspiration

My lifetime of travel around the globe influences all of my designs.

The plantation manor houses of the Caribbean with their gracious verandas, the vibrant palette of textures and hues of Latin America, the interior features of Japan- the tatami mats, tokonoma alcoves and the Mondrian-esque play of windows and doors, the art of the Japanese folding screens, the smells of the souks of the Middle East, the lush Islands of the South Pacific; I could go on about each foreign border I have crossed, the world is so inspiring!

My travels on planes, trains, automobiles, motorcycles, buses and boats, horses and elephants, camels and donkeys have included adventures in the following countries:

Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, the Bahamas, the Caribbean Islands, Jamaica, England, France, Spain, Portugal, The Azores, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, Sicily, India, Nepal, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji. There is so much more to see!

The quote below holds deep meaning for me in all areas of my life, including my design work. My commitment to you is my full, undivided attention and to infuse your project with bold, creative energy.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” ~ William Hutchison Murray
